Romance Was Born encompasses both new and classic modes of fashion resulting in playful elegance. Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales met whilst studying fashion design and launched their Sydney based label in 2005.

Otherworldly prints form the basis of each collection. The designers take inspiration from artists, often working with them collaboratively to create a unique language each season. Previous collaborations include working with artists including Del Kathryn Barton and Kate Rhode. Plunkett and Sales share an obsession for detail - from the naivety of craft to the perfection of a couturier, both elements inform their collections. The pair are known for their ambitious and often theatrical runway shows that realise the Romance Was Born vision. Each show production becomes a dreamscape to explore vast themes of fantasy and vibrant imagery.

Romance Was Born's creativity also attracts invitations to collaborate beyond fashion. Special projects include working as guest curators within a museum context where they meticulously rearranged the rooms of Fairhall House Museum for The Bride, The Ship and The Wardrobe. In 2011 the Sydney Theatre Company commissioned Romance Was Born to design costumes for their production of Edward Gant’s Amazing Feats of Loneliness. The brand have projects planned in 2014 with the nationally recognised Carriageworks in Sydney and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne which further cements their deep interest in the fashion as art space.

For their seventh runway production at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week, RWB was the official opening show for SS12. The desingers have received many awards including the Woolmark Australian Designer Award 2009, the Qantas Spirit Of the Youth Awards (SOYA) Fashion Prize in 2009 and The ITS#4 (International Talent Support) Competition in Italy in 2005.

The brand is currently stocked at over 33 retailers worldwide including; Harvey Nichols in London, Bauhaus in Hong Kong, Lula Rock in Singapore, Dual and HP France in Tokyo. In Australia, they are stocked across a range of independent directional stores including the iconic retailer David Jones as well as their own online shop at
